Seafarers' Mission

A seafarer's job, according to the classification of the International Labour Organization, is one of the most dangerous professions in the world.
For people not connected with the sea, this fact might seem surprising (considering that many view working at sea as "romantic"), but ask an experienced seafarer and they will list a whole range of different challenges associated with this occupation

Firstly, working at sea means prolonged, all-weather, months-long intense work in shifts on a ship under the conditions of sea navigation. Secondly, the ship is almost always in motion – whether it is slight oscillatory movements or strong rolling and pitching. Such motion causes many to suffer from "seasickness," which is not easy to overcome even for experienced seafarers. Thirdly, the ship's crew is constantly exposed to extreme temperatures and harsh weather conditions, especially during long voyages covering many countries and continents. The ship may first encounter the severe cold of the North and then the hot and humid conditions of a tropical climate. Fourthly, extremely high temperatures, vibration, and noise in the engine room, proximity to the ship's radar or radio equipment emitting various types of radiation. Accidents on ships at sea involving people falling overboard, falls on the deck, in the engine room, or from any other structures on the ship while performing tasks. A significant factor remains the professional and interpersonal conflicts that often arise between multinational crew members due to the stressful schedule and lifestyle in confined spaces. All these features complicate life on board the ship, thereby contributing to a range of psychological problems
We provide practical, emotional and spiritual support to seafarers through visits to seafarers' centers by representatives of religious faiths.

A Prayer for All Seafarers

O Lord of the great oceans, we praise and magnify Your Holy name. You have given us a highway on which we may travel to many nations and come to know many peoples. We give You thanks for all seafarers who navigate our ships and carry cargoes all over the world, for our lives are enriched through their labors. Forgive us when we forget how much we owe them and may we rejoice in the skills and courage they bring to their calling. Never leave or forsake them but go with them as they sail the lonely seas and bring them safely home to those who love them. Through Jesus Christ our lord. AMEN.
